More than ten percent of all clients receiving legal cases in 2021 were referred by volunteer attorneys, and many more were referred through community clinics and legal counseling sessions. We remain committed not only to critical customer service for cases, but also to administrative matters such as unemployment appeals and delinquencies.

The Volunteer Lawyers Program and Community Economic Development Programs (Micro-Links and Fundraising) continue to provide legal counseling clinics and direct client services.

Alden: The Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program was established in 1997 when the Dallas Bar Association and Legal Aid of Northwest Texas combined their independent pro bono programs to better serve low-income individuals in Dallas County and their civil law interests. DVAP assists with family law matters (including divorce, child custody, name changes and adoption), estate planning, probate, consumer, tenant, Chapter 7 tenant, veterans’ benefits, small business issues, exclusions, and lack of information.

Alden: DVAP offers young attorneys many great opportunities to join the Dallas legal community, network, and learn new areas of law. By participating in a pro bono case with DVAP, a young lawyer will receive guidance from DVAP’s consulting attorneys and can gain expertise in a new area of law, learn transferable skills and paid customer. By volunteering at DVAP legal clinics and attending DVAP CLEs, young attorneys can meet and network with other attorneys in the community, and assist in-house candidates. clinical with their legal problems, or receive extensive legal training.

Volunteer Lawyer Program

Alden: DVAP offers CLEs almost every week. At least once a month, DVAP hosts a lunchtime CLE at the Belo Mansion on topics relevant to representing DVAP clients, such as adoption or will writing. DVAP also has in-house CLEs for law firms and corporations upon request for business and enterprise needs. We often provide a preview of the clinic before the group sponsors a legal clinic so that everyone knows what to expect and what questions it is important to ask. ask the candidates. DVAP hosts larger CLEs from time to time, such as Family Law Nuts and Bolts and the Probate Symposium. DVAP CLEs are usually free if the attorney agrees to take a case pro bono or volunteer at legal clinics.

Alden: Yes, DVAP employs two full-time attorneys who are available to answer questions, review pleadings, and guide the right attorneys in court. DVAP also needs experienced attorneys who are willing to lead pro bono attorneys in specialized areas, such as more complex family law, litigation and consumer law cases. Any attorney interested in assisting DVAP volunteers can contact me.

Volunteer Lawyer Program

Alden: DVAP exists to provide legal information for people who cannot afford their own attorney. In 2018, DVAP provided full representation to 1,181 people and counseling or brief services to 1,806 people. DVAP also provides referrals to those who do not qualify for our services, need social services or assistance from other non-profit organizations. DVAP staff also attend community education events to promote the services offered by the program.

Alden: The same networking opportunities and social activities are available to all new DVAP volunteers that help graduates integrate themselves into the Dallas legal community. DVAP also works year-round with law students and law graduates and participates in the State Bar of Texas Pro Bono Spring Break program with students from several Texas schools, including the University of Virginia Law School Winter Break Pro Bono -program. DVAP volunteers range from young lawyers starting their own practice to friends and colleagues at large firms and formal pro bono programs to retired lawyers who want to give back, not to mention the All non-lawyers serve at DVAP – including law students, clerks, college students, paralegals, and high school students.

Alden: DVAP has malpractice coverage that covers all pro bono cases and clinics performed by a paralegal. We have two full-time consulting attorneys who file forms, answer questions, and provide practical advice on DVAP pro bono cases. We have outside attorneys available to assist with specific cases when additional assistance is needed. DVAP provides everything volunteers need to have a successful experience.

Volunteer Lawyer Program

Alden: DVAP has focused more on issues related to adoption and concealment, to make the community aware that we can help with these types of issues, and to pass these issues on to our volunteers. DVAP is also working to use technology to make it more accessible to candidates and applicants. Another focus of DVAP right now is its endowment, the Justice Forever Fund, which will keep the fund stable as we look forward.

Alden: DVAP says, “The Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program is an organization dedicated to enhancing and improving legal services for the poor in Dallas through the recruitment, training, and support of volunteer attorneys. ” The bigger picture of what DVAP does is what we do to ensure access to justice for all by using the help of volunteer attorneys to help us achieve that goal. If the courthouse were only open to the rich and powerful, the fundamental principles of American democracy would not be preserved. That’s why we need programs like DVAP to level the playing field. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Injustice everywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Every lawyer can respond to the call for equal access to justice by donating time, donating money, or both.
